When I was a young person in New York my friends teased me that I was “everyone’s publicist” as in I was always promoting friends to each other in the glowiest and most exuberant of ways. I can’t help it! I am ALL IN with people, and if you are lucky enough to be my friend know that I am always praising you to high heavens at various dinner party conversations around town. One of my best friends is Karen Robinovitz, a fellow former fashion journalist and the co-founder of SLOOMOO INSTITUTE, a slime-based playground and museum with locations in New York City, Houston, Chicago and Atlanta…with more coming soon!
Karen is one of my most favorite people because she is a DELIGHT. I met her at a “Fashion Brunch” in Soho in the late 90s thrown by our mutual friend former New York Post Fashion Editor Libby Callaway. Karen was running around all the tables in an Imitation of Christ tank top and a furry Chanel bag, taking pictures of everyone with her cool old-school camera. I was drawn to her energy - she’s TINY but has HUGE charisma, and I loved the outfit and I loved how she was smiling at everyone and just had this very happy aura about her. I immediately wanted her to be my friend. Thankfully she felt the same.
Some days she sends me her outfit of the day and this is today’s. I can’t stop looking at it! I want it! I’m obsessed with it! It’s so good!
She was on TV promoting Sloomoo’s latest openings and sent me this: That’s Sarah Schiller her co-founder on the left and Karen on the right. DYING for her green Valentino pants. The shirt is Dries. (Van Noten, but we always just say Dries lol)
Her text always cheer me up so I thought I would share with you all. Right now it’s rainy and sad in Los Angeles but it’s kind of nice to be cozy and writing at home. I have 1000000000 deadlines so I am of course, working on my Substack which my agent said “I LOVE that idea for you, never do it.” Bwhahahahaha! Richard always says don’t write for free. So this is going to be the last free one for a while. Subscribe! Don’t we all need distractions? I promise to send entertaining posts about shopping and books.
Your personal publicist,
XOXO
Mel
